Where do you find the bears that can be pets? Or are they normal black bears?

You can find bears in the Southers Shiverpeaks late in the game.

Wether pre-searing bears can be caught or not seems to be debatable.

Don't waste your time. they are Slow and useless... We fought in the underworld with a lev 18 bear and he basically did NOTHING, I finally just told him to stop reviving him because he would not even attack the NPCs the guy was fighting... Meanwhile the Spider, Dune Lizard And Lynx in the party were tearing up the level 22 and 26 and 30 creatures quite efficiently... I have no idea why the bear would not attack, but from my view it REALLY sucked as a pet for battles...

Ya, I got a bear to call him smoker(as a spoof on smokey the bear) and basically he stood there, doing absolutely nothing.

bears have slow but strong attacks.... just like moa birds have fast but weak attacks

Before you go off like this..let me educate you:
A) The pet will not attack unless its master attacks first
B) A level 18 pet is not good. Especially not in underworld.
C) Pet strength is based not only on level, but on the level of the master's Beast Mastery.
D) Bears are meant to move slowly, however their attacks are strong and they have a lot of armor.

And to conclude, I can assure you that it wasn't the pets at all that were 'tearing up the level 22 and 26 and 30 creatures quite efficiently...'. Put any pet at any level against a Bladed Aatxe and it will die.. if not instantly.. an instance later.
